RESTAURANT REVIEW
By Zack Z.
Got Crepes?
If you’re on a tight budget and you can handle big portions of food then the Crepevine, located in downtown San Rafael on Fourth Street, is a great place to eat. This Crepevine opened up last March or April of 2006. The first Crepevine was opened on Irvine St. San Francisco in 1992. The family owned, specialty restaurant that first opened on Irvine St in San Fransiscio in 1992 has a variety of crepes – offers twenty different kinds of crepes, both savory and sweet.
Your taste buds can travel from Kyoto to California and everywhere in between. For this trip, we stopped in Santa Fe. The Santa Fe crepe came with a small salad and diced house potatoes, made with grilled chicken apple sausage, scrambled eggs, green onions provolone and salsa fresca that honestly made my mouth water. The sausage was well cooked and full of flavor. Pancakes, omelets, and French toast are other excellent choices. If the crepes that are available for breakfast and lunch do not satisfy your taste buds, then custom crepes can be created. When comparing the large amounts of food served to the actual price of the meal, it is very affordable. There was a very interesting drink that was offered; hot apple cider with a cinnamon stick inside. The French Toast can be served with or without raisins. Even though none of the food is organic, it is still tastes great.
The fun décor of the Crepevine is very homey. Upon walking into the Crepevine there is a huge chalkboard with the entire menu written out in colorful chalk. The restaurant seats about 70-90 people. There is also an outside patio, which would be nice on a warm sunny day. The walls were decorated with abstract modern art that coordinated with the colors that the walls were painted. There music selections played include: pop, light techno, and soft rock. Since the kitchen is open, and not a back room, the noises of sizzling oil and spatulas scraping the grill overwhelmed the music, so at times it was difficult to hear but hey it’s the food one goes to Crepevine for.
